One of the best sci-fi movies of the decade is on TV tonight

The sci-fi action film has earned particular praise for its imaginative vision of the future.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 27 February) is The Creator, the 2023 sci-fi epic from director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Jurassic World Rebirth, Rogue One).

The film takes place in a near future in which a nuclear warhead was detonated over Los Angeles, leading to humanity becoming embroiled in a war against artificial intelligence and the robots it powers.

Amidst the conflict, a former US Army sergeant and undercover operative named Joshua (John David Washington, Tenet) is approached by the military to join a mission to destroy a new and extremely powerful weapon engineered by the AI.

Travelling to ‘New Asia’, an area which has embraced artificial intelligence, Joshua and his strike team invade a compound believed to hold the weapon. There, however, they only discover a robot in the form of a young girl (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).

Joshua is then ordered to kill the robot child, but cannot bring himself to do so. As such, the former sergeant turns against his team and goes on the run with the girl.

The Creator was written by Edwards, alongside Chris Weitz (AfrAId, Murderbot).

The movie’s cast also features Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Gemma Chan (Humans), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Marc Menchaca (Ozark) and Ralph Ineson (The Fantastic Four: First Steps).

Upon release, the film earned rave reviews from critics for its imaginative vision of the future, its incredible robot character designs and the epic scale of its set-pieces.

These qualities are all the more impressive given that the sci-fi was made on the relatively low (for Hollywood!) budget of $80 million.

That said, some reviewers took issue with its screenplay, for its slightly muddled storytelling and thin characters.

Nominated for two Oscars in the Best Sound and Best Visual Effects categories, The Creator is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 9pm.

The movie is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video, Rakuten TV, the Sky Store and YouTube.

Here are some of the other movies airing on TV tonight:

Terminator Genisys – E4 – 9pm

One of the weaker Terminator movies.

Scrapper – BBC Two – 11pm (except Wales)

The acclaimed 2023 British comedy drama follows a resourceful 12-year-old girl (Lola Campbell) who secretly lives alone in her flat in a working-class suburb of London following the death of her mother.

She makes money stealing bikes and manages to keep social workers off her back by pretending to live with an uncle. Out of nowhere, however, her estranged father, Jason (Harris Dickinson, Babygirl) arrives and forces her to confront reality.

The 13th Warrior – Legend – 11.05pm

An underrated historical action flick starring Antonio Banderas, which is also from the director of Die Hard and the writer of Jurassic Park.

A forgotten 2009 superhero thriller starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning.

The Witch: Part 2 – The Other One – Film4 – 11.40pm

A South Korean sci-fi action horror blockbuster sequel.

Scream (2022) – Channel 4 – 12.10am

The very good, if confusingly titled, fifth entry in the Scream franchise starring Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.

Relic – BBC Two – 12.20am

This very creepy and emotionally affecting Australian horror tells the story of a daughter (Bella Heathcote), mother (Emily Mortimer) and grandmother (Robyn Nevin) whose family home becomes haunted.

In this sci-fi gem, a pair of sisters in 1940s England build a machine they call LOLA that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future.

The device’s power, however, holds terrible consequences.
