Owen Wilson’s banned action movie is airing on TV tonight

The film also features a former James Bond in one of the lead roles.

No Escape, the action thriller starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan, which was banned in one country, is airing on TV tonight (Friday, 27 February).

The movie centres around American businessman Jack Dwyer (Wilson), his wife Annie (Lake Bell) and their two young daughters as they arrive in an unnamed Southeast Asian country to begin a new life.

Jack has moved to the region for work, as his company plans to improve the area’s water quality.

Within 24 hours of the Dwyer family’s arrival, however, a violent coup breaks out.

“Armed rebels attack the hotel where they’re staying, ordered to kill any foreigners that they encounter,” the plot synopsis adds.

“Amid utter chaos, Jack must find a way to save himself and his loved ones from the violence erupting all around them.”

Brosnan, meanwhile, plays an enigmatic British traveller named Hammond, who crosses paths with Dwyers and may know more about the political uprising than he lets on.

Upon release in 2015, No Escape received mixed reviews but was a box office hit, grossing $54.4 million on a reported $5 million budget. That said, the film did cause some controversy.

The movie never reveals the country in Southeast Asia where its story takes place.

No Escape was shot in Thailand; however, a condition of the picture being filmed there was that the thriller never identifies the country as its setting.

The trailers for the movie wound up causing uproar in Cambodia over the use of upside-down Khmer lettering on police shields shown in the promo clips.

Khmer is the official language of Cambodia.

Taking great exception to the suggestion that the events of No Escape were taking place in the country, Cambodia’s government banned the movie from being screened there.

Directed by John Erick Dowdle (As Above So Below, Devil, Quarantine), No Escape is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 9pm.

The film is also currently streaming on NOW.
