‘No clearance required’
New files on UFOs have been released on Friday by the Pentagon, which said were “never-before-seen files”, following President Donald Trump’s decision to do so.
Referring to unidentified anomalous phenomena, the modern term for UFOs, the US Department of Defence wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that “the American people can now access the federal government’s declassified UAP files instantly”.
“The latest UAP videos, photos, and original source documents from across the entire United States government are all in one place – no clearance required”, it added.
According to the department, it will release “new materials on a rolling basis as they are discovered and declassified, with tranches posted every few weeks.”
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman applauded Trump for the “effort to bring greater transparency to the American people on unidentified anomalous phenomena.”
In a post on X, Isaacman wrote: “We will remain candid about what we know to be true, what we have yet to understand, and all that remains to be discovered”.
“Exploration and the pursuit of knowledge are core to NASA’s mission as we endeavor to unlock the secrets of the universe”, he added.
‘Very interesting documents’ about UFOs were promised by Trump
In April, Trump revealed that America would soon make information public to all those curious, ufologists and normal people alike, as he revealed that the US defence department “very, very soon” would release new UFO-related documents.
As he spoke at a Phoenix rally, Trump said that earlier this year, in February, he had instructed his defence secretary Pete Hegseth to begin releasing files related to “alien and extra-terrestrial life”.
Interest in UFOs peaked following Barack Obama’s comments
Just three months ago, former President Barack Obama said that “the odds were good there’s life out there”, during a podcast.
The 44th American president even jokingly said that knowing where the aliens are was the first thing he wanted to find out at president.
Obama later issued a second statement about aliens being real, issuing a clarification on Instagram, no less.
His first term predecessor’s comments didn’t sit right with Trump, to say the least.
He was quick to accuse Obama of revealing classified information, saying “he’s not supposed to be doing that”.
UFO ‘sightings’ in the US and the Roswell incident
When it comes to UFOs, what made the biggest headlines in the United States was the debris found in 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico.
It has since become the basis for UFO conspiracy theories alleging that the United States military recovered a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft.
The United States Army Air Forces announced possession of a “flying disc”, after metallic and rubber debris was recovered by Roswell Army Air Field personnel.
This announcement made international headlines, but was retracted within a day, as the debris was from a complex and uncrewed military balloon train consisting of linked balloons and assorted equipment.
It was operated from a nearby air field as part of the top-secret Project Mogul, a program which was intended to detect Soviet nuclear tests.
The American army reported that it was merely a conventional weather balloon to obscure the purpose and source of the debris.
