Donald Trump announces new 10% global tariff after Supreme Court snub

The Supreme Court ruled his tariffs illegal

Donald Trump has announced a new 10% global tariff in response to the Supreme Court ruling his previous tariffs illegal.

Earlier today, the court decided that Trump exceeded his authority when he imposed tariffs last year on a number of countries through a law reserved for national emergencies.

The court ruled that for Trump to introduce tariffs he would need congressional approval.

In a news conference this evening, the US president said the ruling was “deeply disappointing” and that he’s ashamed of “certain members of the court for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country”.

He went on to say that he would continue to try and implement tariffs through other means and accused the Supreme Court of being “swayed by foreign interests”.

He went on to announce that he’s signing an executive order to impose a 10% global tariff using section 122, which was created by the 1974 Trade Act.

He insisted that previously imposed tariffs will remain in place and “in full force”.

It is uncertain whether the US will have to refund the billions of dollars it has levied since introducing the tariffs now deemed illegal.
