Talk about appearance over comfort…
A trend on the rise known as “ballmaxxing” is making men fill their testicles with litres of saline, to make them look bigger.
Typically, a man’s testicles is the size of a plum or a small egg.
But men now are inflating their scrotums to the size of grapefruits, an online Reddit community of nearly 10,000 men has shown.
The men photograph their penis and ball sack with one or two needles inserted and taped into their sack, while they administer saline drips they’ve bought online.
For a time, this causes the testicles to swell, often to a point of making even the penis appear much smaller.
This practice, which comes with significant risks, has roots in the body modification kink and can be both a sexual or non-sexual.
Dr Shirin Lakhani told Metro that “ballmaxxing or scrotal inflation with saline is considered to be quite dangerous, and doctors generally warn against it”.
“The scrotum area is very sensitive and contains delicate structures, including the testes, blood vessels, and nerves, which are not designed to accommodate fluid distension.”
But why are men doing the whole ballmaxxing thing?
In order to get a new suit, and a sporting advantage, athletes at the Winter Olympics were accused of doing this very thing.
However, that’s not what this trend is about for the majority of participants.
According to sex expert Gigi Engle, author of Kink Curious, ballmaxxing can certainly be considered a kink, falling under the umbrella of body modification, as she told Metro.
Via the sensation or the aesthetic gratification, this involves altering the body temporarily or permanently for sexual arousal.
The sex expert explains that “it’s linked to ‘freakshow’ type body modification which celebrates extreme size”.
“Things being larger than life is part of the erotic appeal. People can be very turned on by their balls being inflated or looking at them once they’re inflated”, she says.
In the anonymous community in Reddit, the men seem enjoy the heaviness of their ball sack once it is full and swollen.
“It feels so good to be that heavy”, one wrote, while another added that he enjoyed the feeling of his penis being “buried within” his sack because it was so swollen.
Another Reddit user also reported that he enjoyed the “tingling” of the skin of the tretching.
Ballmaxxers might not do it for sexual reasons at all, however.
Gigi explains that “there’s a direct link with our perceptions of what makes you masculine”.
“Having big balls and a big d**k is linked to being ‘more of a man’. The phrasing of having ‘big balls’ suggests you’re braver, more assertive, and dominant, which is part of it, too”, the sex expert adds.
There’s a difference between ‘ballmaxxing’ and ‘scrotox’
While a phenomenon named “scrotox” involves men getting botox injections in their scrotums, ballmaxxing is something else entirely.
Scrotal Botox, as of last year, had seen 46,000 online queries in the last four years, while Beverly Hills-based surgeon Jason Emer claiming he performed the procedure multiple times every week back in 2016.
The procedure is intended to give men smoother skin, less ball sweat and a lower-hanging look for their testicles.
But ballmaxxing takes this to a whole new level and uses saline rather than injectables to achieve the full effect.
There are dangers that come with ballmaxxing
Sex expert Gigi says ballmaxxing in the kink world is still a relatively niche interest, in spite of the increase in interest.
She stresses it’s extremely risky to practice when you’re “shooting saline into your balls”.
Meanwhile, Dr Lakhani explains that “there are several health risks that can run with injecting your scrotum with saline, including bacterial infection, as introducing any unregulated fluid, especially outside of a medical practice, can cause infection, abscess formation or cellulitis”.
An obvious symptom includes discomfort, with a lot of men on the Reddit forum complaining of a burning sensation, as well as pain, swelling and inflammation.
Another possible worrying issue is erectile dysfunction, due to the blood flow being disrupted by the pressure of inflation.
