Major UK airline cancels all Cyprus flights after RAF base attack

It comes after attacks on RAF Akrotiri

A major UK airline has cancelled flights to Cyprus after an Iranian attack on RAF Akrotiri.

RAF Akrotiri is located in British Overseas Territory on the island, and it was struck by a drone on Sunday night (1 March).

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said “a Shahed unmanned aerial vehicle” crashed into the base, “causing minor material damage”.

Family members of personnel are being moved away from the base as a precaution, but the base is continuing to operate as normal otherwise, officials said.

It has also been reported that sirens are sounding again today (Monday, 2 March), as two drones heading towards the base have been intercepted.

In response to the attacks, major UK airline EasyJet has announced the cancellation of all flights from the UK to Cyprus today.

EasyJet said in a statement: “Due to the events overnight affecting the RAF base in Akrotiri in Cyprus, as a precaution, three return flights between Paphos and Larnaca and the UK today will not be operating.

“Flights from 3 March are currently operating as planned but we would advise customers due to travel to and from Cyprus over the coming days to check our flight tracker for the latest information.

“We are doing all we can to minimise the impact for our customers and are providing options for rebooking including on other airlines or a refund as well as hotel accommodation and meals for those who require them.

“The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority and we continue to closely monitor the security situation in the region.”

The full list of cancelled flights are as follows:

  • EZY2279 from Manchester to Paphos
  • EZY2280 from Paphos to Manchester
  • EZY6337 from London Gatwick to Larnica
  • EZY638 from Larnica to London Gatwick
  • EZY8651 from London Gatwick to Paphos
  • EZY8652 from Paphos to London Gatwick
