Several major airlines, including Wizz Air, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways, have announced that they are suspending flights following the ‘recent escalation of the security situation’ in Iran.
The disruption follows reports of explosions in multiple Iranian cities after the United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran, significantly escalating tensions.
Subsequently, the military action has triggered immediate travel changes from major airlines.
Now, airlines including Wizz Air, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways and British Airways have cancelled or suspended services to destinations such as Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman and Bahrain due to safety concerns.
The dramatic move follows a joint US‑Israeli assault on Iran today, with initial strikes reportedly occurring near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iranian media quickly reported strikes nationwide as smoke could be seen rising from the capital.
US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to confirm that the US had begun “major combat operations in Iran.” He went on to claim that Iran has continued to develop its nuclear program and plans to develop missiles to reach the U.S.
Wizz Air issued a statement this morning: “Following the recent escalation of the security situation in Iran, Wizz Air confirms it is suspending all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman with immediate effect, up until and including 7th March.
“The airline is closely monitoring developments and remains in ongoing contact with local and international authorities, aviation safety agencies, security authorities, and relevant governmental bodies. Operational decisions will continue to be reviewed, and the flight schedule may be adjusted as the situation evolves.
“The safety and security of our passengers, crew and aircraft remain Wizz Air’s highest priority. We acknowledge the disruption this may cause and appreciate the understanding of our customers. Passengers with affected bookings will be contacted directly with information regarding their options.”
Virgin Airlines also said it has cancelled its VS400 service from Heathrow to Dubai, which was due to depart at 10.10 pm, “as a precautionary measure,” per The Mirror.
A spokesperson said: “The safety and security of our customers and people is always our top priority and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Qatar Airways said flights from and to Doha were suspended due to the closure of Qatari airspace.
British Airways further confirmed it has cancelled flights to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until March 3.
It has also been suggested that an overnight BA flight from Heathrow to Doha turned back mid-journey and is on its way back to London, according to reports.
A spokesperson for British Airways said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and have taken the operational decision to cancel our flights to Tel Aviv and Bahrain up to and including 03 March and have cancelled today’s service to Amman.
“Safety is always our top priority, and we’re contacting our customers to advise them of their travel options.”
