Major UK supermarket announce they’re cutting hundreds of jobs

Up to 300 jobs are at risk

A retailer in the UK has announced that they’re cutting hundreds of jobs as part of a major restructure.

Hundreds of jobs are at risk now at Sainsbury’s, which employs around 140,000 people.

The retailer could cut up to 300 jobs across Sainsbury’s and Argos, it was revealed, while most of the cuts will affect its data and technology teams.

This comes as it is restructuring the unit into one dedicated team for Argos and two for Sainsbury’s.

This is the third year of Sainsbury’s restructure, which it announced in February 2024, with planes to target £1billion in cost savings.

The retailer reported strong sales during Christmas, but faces stiff competition and performance in general merchandise, while clothing was less encouraging, falling 1 per cent over the period.

Argos will also see sweeping changes, as it has struggled in recent years, due to cheaper online alternatives tempting customers away from the high street.

Last year, the Sainsbury’s boss Simon Roberts flagged business rates and National Insurance rises as threats to jobs.

There’ll also be sweeping changes at Argos, which has struggled in recent years as cheaper online alternatives tempt customers away from the high street.

Recently, Ocado also announced that 1,000 jobs will be slashed as part of a £150million cost-cutting drive.
