BrewDog calls in advisers as craft beer brand launches formal sale process

It is one of the largest brewers in the UK

BrewDog has called in advisers as the well-known craft beer brewer launches a formal sale process of the company.

This comes via Sky News who reported that the Scotland-based brewer is looking to be sold in a move that could break up the business.

The brewer is behind some of the most well known beers in the UK, including Punk IPA and Elvis Juice.

Sky reported that the board of BrewDog has appointed restructuring experts AlixPartners to help feel out interest for potential buyers.

It was reported that many of the brewer’s more than 200,000 individual shareholders could see little return on their average £400 outlay.

Many became investors through the company’s ‘Equity for Punks’ scheme.

However, others had been able to make significant returns after selling stock in previous funding rounds.

This scheme helped the company raise around £75m with offers of discounts and early access to new beers.

These funding rounds have been going on since 2009, with the last in 2021.

BrewDog was founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie, with Watt remaining a large shareholder in the company.

Reports suggest he may be interested in buying the company back.

A spokesperson for BrewDog said: “Following a year of decisive action in 2025, which saw a focus on costs and operating efficiencies, we have appointed AlixPartners to support a structured and competitive process to evaluate the next phase of investment for the business.

“This is a deliberate and disciplined step with a focus on strengthening the long-term future of the BrewDog brand and its operations.”

BrewDog has struggled in recent times, announcing job cuts across the business in October last year after posting a £37m loss on turnover of £357m

As well as selling beer from the shelves, BrewDog has 72 bars globally.

Earlier in the year it announced the closure of 10 bars across the UK.

The company currently employs around 1,400 people and has breweries in Ellon as well as in the US, Australia and Germany.

The sale process comes amid tough conditions for independent brewers, with the group behind Black Sheep recently being sold through a pre-pack administration.
