Donald Trump raises eyebrows after saying ‘the people in Europe like me’

Polls seem to differ…

US President Donald Trump has said that he is liked in Europe, even though polls seem to show the opposite.

At a White House event on Wednesday, the US president has been named the “Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal”.

Trump used this occasion to sign an executive order instructing the Department of Defense to buy electricity from coal-fired power plants.

Framing it as part of his broader energy agenda, he praised coal as a reliable energy source and highlighted the economic benefits of supporting domestic power plants.

Trump also turned his attention to Europe during his speech, as he criticised the spread of wind turbines across the continent, claiming the technology was failing and labelled the turbines “losers, they lose.”

“Every time it goes around it loses a fortune. You’re supposed to make money with energy, not lose money with energy. And they lose a lot of money”, Trump said.

“And you know, I was recently there and it’s not recognizable what they’ve done to their beautiful fields and those beautiful, beautiful scenic areas and they put those wind turbines all over the place and they’re chugging, chugging, chugging, not doing a damn thing”, he continued.

On his personal standing in Europe, Trump said that his views on energy, focusing on fossil fuel production, might be the reason why some people there dislike him.

However, he quickly emphasized that he still enjoys support from people who agree with his energy policies.

“But you know who likes me over there? The people like me over there. I can tell you because they know I’m right.”

In spite of his claims, polling shows that Trump is largely unpopular in the continent.

“How popular is Donald Trump in Western Europe?” was the question of a YouGov survey in January, and the results showed low support across the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, with no country recording more than 19% of respondents holding a favorable view.

The lowest ranking was from Denmark, as only 4% were approving and 94% expressed an unfavorable opinion.
