Ten reportedly died at the scene

At least 11 people have been killed and twelve others have been left wounded after gunmen opened fire during an amateur football match in Mexico on Sunday.

Local authorities said that a group of gunmen opened fire as people were gathered for a football game in Salamanca, in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico.

The local government said in a statement that “Salamanca expresses its deepest condolences to the families and individuals affected by these events”, as reported by Spanish newspaper, El País.

Ten people are reported to have died at the scene, while another died in the hospital, according to national news outlets Excelsior and El Universal, who have cited Mayor César Prieto Gallardo.

According to Reuters, the mayor revealed in a video that he shared on social media that “a woman and a child were among those injured in the regrettable and cowardly” attack.

“Likewise, 12 people were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical attention,” the authorities said, per El Universal.

Excelsior reported that an investigation was “immediately” launched following the attack, while the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) is coordinating with federal authorities to collect evidence and reinforce security measures.

El País reported that even though violence has decreased in the past year, Guanajuato is currently the Mexican state with the highest number of homicides.
