Very wallet-friendly

Baked beans are an essential item that you can add in many different dishes, and they’re very affordable in addition to being nutritious.

However, if you might have wondered which tin of baked beans is the best one and were undecided which one to pick from the shelves, now there is an answer.

In a taste test which was conducted by Which?, 60 baked bean experts tested 12 different tins as they compared brands like Heinz and Branston to supermarket own-label offerings from Lidl, Tesco and Asda.

And the joint first place was shared by two rather affordable supermarket tins: Aldi and Lidl.

They just edged past Heinz, while all three earned Which? Best Buy status.

These supermarket own-brand beans bagged the UK’s leading independent consumer champion’s Great Value badge too.

A 77% rating was achieved by Aldi’s Bramwells Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce, and these cost a mere 40p for a 410g tin.

These beans were described as an “excellent all-rounder” by the experts, as nearly three-quarters of those who tested appreciated the quality of the sauce, in addition to the beans’ texture.

The exact same score, 77%, was earned by Lidl’s Newgate Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce, and they’re also priced at 40p for a 410g tin.

Heinz, which narrowly missed out on the top spot, had a score of 76%, however it’s clearly the most expensive choice, as for a 415g tin they’re priced at at £1.40.

Third place, with a 74% score from the testers, was secured by Branston beans. They aren’t as pricey as Heinz, at £1 for a 410g tin, but obviously more expensive than the ones by Lidl and Aldi.

How did other supermarket brands beans rank?

Asda Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce – 73% (40p for 410g)

Sainsbury’s Baked Beans in Tasty Tomato Sauce – 73% (40p for 400g)
