Residents described hearing explosions

A ‘major toxic incident’ has been declared in Wolverhampton after a huge fire ripped through a factory in the city.

Emergency services were called to a burning factory this morning (Wednesday 14 January) on Sunbeam Street shortly after 7.30am.

Residents reported the large blaze as well as loud explosions coming from the facility.

Images from the scene showed black smoke and flames engulfing the factory.

West Midlands Fire Service has urged local residents to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke.

Former Labour councillor Paul Birch told Birmingham Live the incident is a “major toxic incident”.

He said: “It’s in an area of mixed light industrial and housing. Our local councillor, Sally Green, was on the scene early on and called the emergency response.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors and close their windows as a major toxic incident is emerging.”

In a statement posted on Wednesday, the service said: “Shortly after 7.30am on Wednesday (14 January), we responded to Sunbeam Street, near the junction Upper Villiers Street in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton.

We currently have eight fire engines, a 4×4 brigade response vehicle and a hydraulic aerial platform in attendance.

“Firefighters from Bilston, Fallings Park, Tipton, Willenhall, Haden Cross, Wednesbury, Dudley and Walsall are at the scene. The first crew arrived at the incident within three minutes of being mobilised.

“This is a fire in a factory building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently tackling the fire using hose reel jets.

“This is a live incident. Please avoid the area whilst we work at the scene as there is significant disruption. If you live or work in the area, please close your doors and windows.”
