All you need to know about the Manchester derby on the weekend

Manchester United host city rivals Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, but as both teams have different ambitions in the current Premier League season, getting the full three points is undoubtedly their objective for the Old Trafford clash.

The last derby belonged to City, as they beat United convincingly 3-0 in the teams’ first clash of the current season in the Premier League.

Back in their September meeting, it was two goals by Erling Haaland and one by Phil Foden that sealed the deal as City triumphed in the 197th Manchester derby.

The last derby at Old Trafford ended in a goalless draw in April of last year, while United’s last win was at the Etihad on December of 2024.

When it comes to Old Trafford, in the event of a win, this would be United’s first in home soil in three years, as their last win in front of the home fans dates back to January of 2023.

How has the current season been for the two Manchester clubs?

As we approach Gameweek 22, United have won 8 drawn 8 and lost five of their league matches.

Following Ruben Amorim’s sacking and naming former midfielder Darren Fletcher in caretaker role, United haven’t fared much better on the pitch.

A 2-2 draw with relegation strugglers Burnley was followed by a third-round FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton on Sunday.

Club legend Michael Carrick is close to agreeing a deal to return as caretaker head coach for the rest of the season.

Talks have reportedly progressed and the former United and England midfielder, 44, is set to be in charge for Saturday’s derby against City.

City, on the other hand, have 13 wins, four draws and just as many defeats.

Pep Guardiola’s side currently sits second in the Premier League table on 43 points, six less than leaders Arsenal and equal with Aston Villa who are third on the table.
