Ruben Amorim could be set for a shock return to Premier League management, just days after his sacking at Manchester United, according to an English football legend.

Amorim’s departure from Old Trafford came amidst one of the worst runs in form in the club’s recent history, and a reported behind-the-scenes dispute with club official Jason Wilcox.

During his first season in charge, the Red Devils lost the Europa League final to Tottenham and finished 15th, and after spending over £200 million on new acquisitions the following summer, Amorim’s side looked no closer to competing for any of the major trophies.

The 40-year-old’s inability to win key matches in the English game did come as something of a surprise though, considering his success in Portugal, where Amorim won two league titles with Sporting Lisbon.

Despite Amorim’s high-profile sacking, one of the best defenders in Premier League history thinks Amorim could make his return within weeks.

According to Sol Campbell, speaking to Sky Bet via Metro, Ruben Amorim would be an ideal replacement for Thomas Frank, should Tottenham opt to part company with their Danish manager.

Frank is under immense pressure at Spurs, who are 14th in the league table, and were just last week dumped out of the FA Cup in the third-round.

Sol Campbell said: “They’ll be looking at him [Ruben Amorim].

“They’re probably talking to him now, that wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t think he’ll go back to Portugal.

“Tottenham will be talking to him to see if there’s any situation going on – there’ll be people talking behind the scenes.

“Thomas Frank is a top manager, but he’s not at Brentford anymore – it’s a different animal. Tottenham is a big club and people are demanding.

“They want success and they want to keep moving forward in a successful way. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re talking to other managers.

“Obviously, if he starts turning it around and winning games and having good performances, that helps.

“Sometimes you don’t need to win, but if you can have good performances and show you’re moving in the right direction, that can help.”

Campbell’s remarks on the Spurs situation are unlikely to be received favourably by supporters in north London.

The English defender infamously became one of the few players to ever swap Spurs for Arsenal, when he joined the Gunners in the early 2000s.

Campbell went on to star as part of the Arsenal “Invincibles” side of 2004.
