A High Court judge has ruled that Palestine Action can bring a legal challenge against the UK government over its designation as a terrorist organisation, in a significant legal victory for the activist group.
Ministers are now facing a full-blown judicial review over the decision to proscribe the pro-Palestinian group, which campaigners have warned is having a “chilling impact” on freedom of expression in the UK.
The High Court on Wednesday gave the group’s co-founder Huda Ammori the go-ahead for a judicial review against the ban, which parliament approved earlier this month after its members broke into Brize Norton, the UK’s largest air base, and damaged military aircraft with red spray paint and crowbars.
The designation makes it a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison to belong to or support the organisation.
Mr Justice Chamberlain said that “the order [to ban Palestine Action] will have an impact on the claimant’s and others freedom of expression and freedom to protest on an issue of particular importance”.
