A school has been put on partial lockdown
Armed police and emergency services attended an ‘ongoing incident’ this morning in a UK city centre while a local school has also been placed on lockdown.
Reports also said that a police helicopter had been seen flying overhead.
The nature is the incident is not entirely yet clear, although an update has been released by police.
A statement by North Wales Police said: “We are currently dealing with an ongoing police incident in Wrexham city centre.
“As a result, there is a heavy police presence in the area, including authorised firearms officers as a precautionary measure. We will share further information in due course.”
In an updated statement, police said: “Searches were carried out in the Wrexham area this morning to identify an individual following reports of suspicious behaviour, shortly after 8.41am today, 14 May.
“The individual was identified and located near to the Maelor Hospital where he was spoken to by officers. Concerns were found to be well intentioned but unfounded.”
Plas Coch school, which is located on Stansty Road, has been put into a partial lockdown “on the advice of the police”, the leader from the school said in an email sent to parents and carers.
In a notice sent out by the school, it said: “We have had to put the school into a partial lockdown this morning on the advice of the police.
“All the pupils and staff are safe in the building.
“Could you please not try to contact the school nor come here so that we can keep the phone lines clear and as no one is allowed in or out of the school grounds.
“We will update with with any further information once we have it.”
In the most recent statement, assistant Chief Constable Nicholas Evans said: “I understand the increased policing presence in the Wrexham area this morning may have been unsettling and caused alarm among the community.
“I would like to reassure members of the public that the individual was identified, and concerns were found to be well intentioned but unfounded.
“Officers will remain visible in the area today for reassurance purposes.
“Thank you to those who reported the incident to police and to the public for their patience while we dealt with the incident, which has now concluded.”
