The player’s condition is ‘non-sports-related’
James Rodríguez has been hospitalised for the past three days after showing signs of “severe dehydration” from Colombia’s World Cup warm-up game against France last Sunday.
The South American nation lost 3-1 to the 2018 World Champions in the US city of Maryland on Sunday, in what appeared to have been an uneventful friendly game.
On Thursday (2 April), the Colombian Football Federation released a statement confirming that the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder had spent 72 hours under observation in a Minnesota hospital.
The statement begins: “The day after the match against France, the player [James Rodríguez] presented symptoms of severe dehydration, which necessitated his hospitalisation over the past 72 hours for preventive clinical monitoring and recovery.”
“[Rodriguez] has been under professional observation due to a medical condition of non-sports-related origin,” it continues.
“It is important to clarify that this situation is unrelated to any musculoskeletal injuries, nor is it linked to the performance of his footballing activities.”
The player’s current condition does appear to be improving, with the federation adding that a medical report “indicates a favourable prognosis and steady improvement.”
According to reports, the 34-year-old has returned home from hospital and is continuing recoverey there.
It remains to be seen if the player’s condition has any further impact on his World Cup campaign, or future footballing career.
