Netflix star Gerardo Taracena has died at the age of 55.
Taracena was perhaps best known for his role in Narcos: Mexico, in which he played Pablo Acosta alongside Diego Luna and Michael Pena.
Born in Mexico City, Taracena rose to fame for his performance as Middle Eye in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto.
He also starred in Texas Rising, Sound of Freedom, Private Perez, and the Netflix series Queen of the South.
His death was confirmed in a statement, reading: “The National Association of Actors deeply regrets the departure of our colleague Gerardo Taracena. We join in the grief felt by his family, friends and the artistic community.”
CinematicaMexico also paid tribute, writing: “His presence and the power of his performances left an indelible mark on cinema and theatre, in Mexico and the United States.”
Many tributes from fans have also been shared online, with one writing: “Losing such a versatile powerhouse at only 55 feels like a massive robbery for both Mexican cinema and his global fans. He brought an unmistakable gravity to every scene, making even the smallest roles feel absolutely vital.”
Another wrote: “One of the best actors I’ve seen. Loved his portrait of Acosta in Narcos.”
