Around 300 jobs are at risk

A major UK bank is set to close 44 bank branches with the full list of locations being revealed.

In the latest hit to the high street, another major UK bank is set to close dozens of branches across the nation.

This comes as the likes of Lloyds, NatWest and Barclays have closed branches in the last few years.

Now, Santander UK are set to shut down 44 of their branches, leaving the bank with just 244 full service branches.

The move is expected to put around 291 jobs at risk.

As more people use online banking, Santander said the closures were down to “changing customer behaviour”.

The bank claims that it has experienced 96 per cent surge in digital transactions since 2019 while branch transactions have fallen by 66 per cent in the same period of time.

It comes during a difficult time for the UK high street, following a number of closures from businesses falling into administration.

Only this week both Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop were reported to be entering administration, putting a collective 2,500 jobs at risk as well as hundreds of stores.

This follows on from a number of other retail giants struggling in 2025.

Poundland, River Island, Claire’s, and a number of travel agents have flirted with administration, been forced to restructure, or disappeared completely from the high street.
