Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr was taken to hospital in the hours after his nation’s Afcon final victory in Rabat, as reported in Senegalese outlet Taggat via Football London.

The 23-year-old played no part in the dramatic final, having started the clash against hosts Morocco on the bench, before beginning to feel unwell during the half-time break, when the scores were still tied 0-0.

Sarr had been sent to warm-up by Senegalese head coach Pape Thiaw minutes ahead of the interval, before reportedly falling ill.

The Spurs midfielder’s health setback is said to have come after Senegal teammates Krepin Diatta and Ousseynou Niang had been taken ill during a pre-match warm-up.

Video footage reportedly displayed Diatta “hunched over on the pitch” while Niang had to be carried and escorted back into the dressing room by his teammates.

Senegalese outlet Taggat laid out the situation of the Senegalese trio, reporting: “The three players are doing well, according to the doctor, at Mohammed VI Hospital in Rabat.

“Ousseynou Niang will return to the hotel. Krepin Diatta and Pape Matar Sarr are still being kept at the hospital for further observations.”

No further details regarding the seriousness of their illnesses, or the cause, have yet been revealed.

It also remains to be seen whether Sarr and the others will take any part in trophy parade celebrations expected to take place in the Senegalese capital of Dakar in coming days.

Pape Matar Sarr has played for Tottenham since 2021, appearing just shy of 100 times in the Premier League for the north Londoners.

He began his senior career with Ligue 1 outfit Metz, and has gone on to play for the Lions of Teranga 37 times.
