{"id":5649,"date":"2026-05-15T08:34:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T08:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5649"},"modified":"2026-05-15T08:34:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T08:34:46","slug":"coronation-street-star-alan-rothwell-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5649","title":{"rendered":"Coronation Street star Alan Rothwell dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>Tributes poured in<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose drop-cap \">\n<p>Coronation Street star and original cast member Alan Rothwell has died aged 89 with the show paying tribute to the actor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>As well as appearing in a number of shows, Rothwell was most well known for being one of the original cast members, starring in the show since its inception in the 60s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>He played the role of David Barlow in Corrie, the brother of Ken Barlow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:0\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The news of his death was shared by the official Instagram account of Coronation Street, paying tribute to the veteran actor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The page posted a black and white image of Rothwell and captioned it: &#8220;We&#8217;re very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell&#8217;s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>&#8220;He created an iconic and memorable character in David Barlow and will forever be remembered as one of the original cast members of Coronation Street.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:1\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Rothwell&#8217;s family confirmed the actor &#8220;died peacefully in hospital&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>In tribute, the family said: &#8220;Beyond his professional achievements, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>&#8220;He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Rothwell, who was born in Oldham, starred in the soap from 1960 until 1969 and would go on to play roles in a number of other TV shows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>These included the likes of Brookside, Doctors, Gideon&#8217;s Way, The Villains and many others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:2\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>He was also known for presenting ITV kids&#8217; show Picture Box.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Coronation Street star\u00a0Samia Longchambon, 43, who plays Maria Connor, added to the tributes, writing: &#8220;So sad to hear this. Alan was a also drama teacher at our drama school and I have such fond memories of being taught by him&#8230; he was a wonderful man.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>After the death of Rothwell, there remains few surviving Coronation Street originals, with Anne Cunningham who played Linda Cheveski, Patricia Shakesby who was Ken&#8217;s first love interest Susan Cunningham, and Ken Barlow played by William Roache still alive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Roache has held the record for the longest serving actor in a soap opera since 2010.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<p>#Coronation #Street #star #Alan #Rothwell #dies<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tributes poured in Coronation Street star and original cast member Alan Rothwell has died aged 89 with the show paying tribute to the actor.
