{"id":5628,"date":"2026-05-14T10:14:33","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5628"},"modified":"2026-05-14T10:14:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:14:33","slug":"closed-uk-airport-abandoned-years-ago-begins-path-to-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5628","title":{"rendered":"Closed UK airport \u2018abandoned\u2019 years ago begins path to reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>Plans have been backed by the government<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose drop-cap \">\n<p>A UK airport which was &#8216;abandoned&#8217; years ago has began the process to reopening after a loan was greenlit to pave the way forward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>There are 19 Airports in the UK which saw more than a million passengers through its terminal doors in 2025 while the UK Parliament website details that there are &#8220;50 airports in the UK that can be considered regional.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>While regional airlines are struggling in the UK, regional airports are on the up as low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, EasyJet and Jet2 continue to base planes at smaller airports away from the capital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:0\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:1\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Regional airports allow for cheaper slots for many airlines as well as easy travel for passengers who don&#8217;t have to make the long trip to London or Manchester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>While regional airlines such as Blue Islands and Eastern Airways have gone bust in recent months, CAA reported an increase by 2.3 per cent in overall UK passenger traffic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>And, despite the closure of Coventry Airport to make way for a business park, there are plans to reopen Manston Airport in Kent and now Doncaster Airport has been set on the path to reopening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The airport, which closed in 2022, has been given a new lease of life after it was revealed that a \u00a357 million loan from Doncaster Council to support the reopening has been approved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:2\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The news comes after a row over the loan between Labour and Reform UK councillors was resolved in a May 11 council meeting, according to\u00a0Doncaster Free Press.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:3\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>Previously an important piece of the regional airport landscape<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Doncaster Airport previously served hundreds of thousands of passengers each year, but was closed in November 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The last inbound flight touched down from Egypt on November 4, 2022, at 9:15pm. The final flight to leave the airport was November 5 at 12:15am, headed for Manchester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:4\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The site closed after its owners, Peel Group, claimed it was\u00a0no longer financially viable\u00a0to keep it open, a decision which proved controversial to many.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>In 2019, the airport handled 1.4 million passengers with flights to Spain and Eastern Europe being popular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Tui and Wizz Air were two of the largest airlines at the airport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>It is hoped that the reopening of the airport could help relieve pressure on the likes of Manchester Airport, Leeds-Bradford and East Midlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:5\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:6\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/predictor.joemediagroup.ie\/pl?competition=premier-league\" width=\"100%\" height=\"1900\" frameborder=\"0\" data-embed-type=\"embed\" data-embed-src=\"https:\/\/predictor.joemediagroup.ie\/pl?competition=premier-league\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<p>#Closed #airport #abandoned #years #begins #path #reopening<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plans have been backed by the government A UK airport which was &#8216;abandoned&#8217; years ago has began the process to reopening after a loan was greenlit to pave the way forward.
