{"id":5518,"date":"2026-05-09T20:01:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T20:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5518"},"modified":"2026-05-09T20:01:57","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T20:01:57","slug":"after-nine-decades-uk-airport-has-stopped-all-flights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=5518","title":{"rendered":"After nine decades, UK airport has stopped all flights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>The site has a new purpose<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose drop-cap \">\n<p>From Saturday, a UK airport has ceased all flights ahead of its closing for good in June, it has been revealed with the site set to become the home of a new multi-billion-pound green energy plant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>It is earmarked for a multi-billion pound green energy plant with the UK Civil Aviation Authority confirming that next month it will close its doors for good.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The closure will mark an end to a ling 90-year history of the location.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:0\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:1\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>According to the Civil Aviation Authority, on May 9 is when flights will officially end at Coventry Airport while the the site will permanently shut down on June 11.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Coventry Airport has \u201cgiven formal notice to us of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026\u201d, a CAA spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:2\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Greenpower Park will replace the airport, as a site for vehicle battery production and recycling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:3\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The site is located within the West Midlands Investment Zone, which is a government initiative intended to develop the region\u2019s manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>More than 30,000 jobs will be created while attracting a possible \u00a35.5 billion in private investment, according to the West Midlands Combined Authority.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Originally the site was established as Baginton Aerodrome in 1936.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>It has accommodated freight, small aircraft, and occasional commercial flights over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:4\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:5\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p><em>Coventry Airport. Credit: Getty<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>In 1982, the airport also played host to a Papal visit in 1982, when Pope John Paul II toured the UK and drew an estimated 350,000 people to the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>In early 2004, the airport sold its lease to the German travel company TUI AG.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>This led to a significant increase in commercial flight operations with flights by Thomsonfly using two Boeing 737s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Meanwhile, further expansion came when Wizz Air started flights to Poland from the airport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:6\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>In 2007 the airport saw 5,553 flights and 1,012,281 seats, as per Simple Flying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>However, operations would be short-lived as the airport would cease flights in 2008.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>These days the main operations at the airport consist of Air Ambulance Service and private charter flights.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Reflecting on the airport&#8217;s rich history and the potential consequences for local businesses and the wider community, many locals have voiced their opinions on the closure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Coventry Airport\u2019s last scheduled passenger flights operated in November 2008, primarily driven by the withdrawal of Thomsonfly after a failed bid to build a new permanent terminal. <\/p>\n<p>According to the BBC and Coventry Telegraph, the final commercial flight arriving from Malaga landed on November 9, 2008, leaving the site with only freight and general aviation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<p>#decades #airport #stopped #flights<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The site has a new purpose From Saturday, a UK airport has ceased all flights ahead of its closing for good in June, it has been revealed with the site set to become the home of a new multi-billion-pound green energy plant.
