including a star-studded live event at the Royal Albert Hall and Knowsley Safari Park offering free admission to anyone called David.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>As he\u2019s officially joined the centenarian club, there\u2019s a few facts about the beloved broadcaster and biologist which not many have heard of.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>One of these includes one animal which the environmentalist \u201chates\u201d, which might not come as a big surprise for some, as it\u2019s one which is despised by a large percentage of the world population.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:0\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>The animal which Attenborough cannot stand<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>While he is widely known for his gentle enthusiasm towards most life forms on the planet, there is one animal in particular which he has been open about disliking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Attenborough bluntly said \u201cI can\u2019t bear rats\u201d, during a 60 Minutes interview and subsequent press coverage, revealing how while filming in a Hindu temple, \u201ccrawling\u201d with them left him unnerved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>To the surprise of many, however, the legendary broadcaster has revealed he is comfortable handling venomous snakes, scorpions and spiders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The reason for his disliking of rats?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:1\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>According to the man himself, his dislike comes due to their association with filth and disease and to the way they share our urban spaces without much fear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>He even described them as invading research vessel was constructed by Cammell Laird at its Birkenhead shipyard for the Natural Environment Research Council and is operated by the British Antarctic Survey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:2\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The vessel was named after the BBC&#8217;s most beloved broadcaster after a public vote initially went for the more tongue-in-cheek \u201cBoaty McBoatface\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>By Attenborough, the ship was hailed as an \u201castonishing ship\u201d that would \u201cfind the science with which to deal with the problems that are facing the world today.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The ship today provides access to some of the most remote parts of the Antarctic and Arctic, carrying laboratories, robotic vehicles and up to 60 scientists to study ice, oceans and climate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p><strong>In every TV format, he has won BAFTAs<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Reflecting a career that has spanned every major phase of television technology, Attenborough is the only person known to have won BAFTA awards for programmes in black\u2011and\u2011white, colour, high\u2011definition and 3D.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:3\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p><strong>He is partly responsible for bringing colour television to Britain<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>The broadcaster is more than just an award-winning presenter for the BBC, as he has helped in bringing colour TV to the station.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Attenborough championed the introduction of colour broadcasting, ensuring the channel became the first in Europe to transmit in colour on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>This happened during the time when he served as controller of BBC Two from 1965 to 1969, and later as director of programmes for BBC Television.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:4\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p><strong>On climate change, he changed his mind two decades ago<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:5\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>What may surprise many, is that in spite of decades spent in documenting the natural world, Attenborough was initially cautious about accepting the scientific consensus on man\u2011made climate change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>He described himself as having been \u201csceptical\u201d and \u201ccautious about crying wolf,\u201d explaining that he did not want to speak out until he was convinced the evidence was conclusive that humans were driving global warming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>However, in 2004, after attending a lecture, Attenborough became convinced \u201cthe evidence was beyond argument,\u201d prompting him to use his programmes to highlight the issue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>He even devoted prime\u2011time series specifically to climate change and its consequences, in the two BBC documentaries: Are We Changing Planet Earth? and Can We Save popular series such as Planet Earth and Blue Planet have repeatedly underlined climate concerns since then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>They\u2019ve used changes in the natural landscape and animal habitation to bring to life the very real cost of carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>What is more, Attenborough has also produced one\u2011off special programmes, such as Climate Change: The Facts, which warn directly about the urgency of protecting fragile ecosystems and cutting emissions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<p><h2>Prior to his 100th birthday, Attenborough said he wasn\u2019t afraid of death<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>Ahead of his milestone 100th birthday, the beloved broadcaster and biologist has said he is \u201cnot afraid of death\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:8\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not afraid of d.e.a.t.h\u2026 I&#8217;m afraid of not living enough\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>\u201cAfter living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land but at sea\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><!--$?--><template id=\"B:9\"\/><!--\/$--><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-prose  \">\n<p>\u201cIf we save the sea, we save our world.
