A woman says vaping left her with two “black” front teeth – after she spent \u00a317.2k on her nine year habit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stacey Gardiner, 41, had never smoked before she began vaping in December 2017, and began using an electric vapes before swiftly changing to the disposable version when vapes shops began \u201cpopping up\u201d near her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

She would go through five vapes per week – and sometimes use up a standard 600-puff vape in just one day – spending \u00a3120-a-month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

She first noticed a black mark at the top of her front right tooth five years ago in August 2021, but it \u201cdidn\u2019t occur\u201d to her what was causing it \u2013 and it has since progressed to take over the tops of both front teeth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

After she had an emergency dental appointment last year to remove two molars, Stacey says she mentioned her two front teeth to the dentist – who said the damage was likely “down to vaping”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Stacey has been on the waiting list for her local NHS dentist for over five years, having last had a check-up 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

She went \u201ccold turkey\u201d on her habit six months ago after realising it was \u201cjust a habit\u201d and \u201cdidn\u2019t actually enjoy it\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She found Nicorette patches prescribed by her GP were not helping and paid \u00a3200 for a set of clip in veneers to disguise her damaged teeth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

After getting her \u201csmile back\u201d Stacey does not think there is enough awareness about the damage vapes can cause to teeth and wants to warn \u201cyoung people\u201d about the potential dangers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stacey, a blogger, from Swansea, Wales, said: \u201cIt was about four years ago a bit of black started at the top of one tooth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t occur to me what was causing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe vapes cost \u00a38 each and I was going through them, around four to five vapes per week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI always cleaned my teeth twice a day, I don\u2019t eat sweets and at first I wasn\u2019t aware what was causing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m on a waiting list here in Wales but the chances of getting an NHS dentist are slim.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s noticeable for people to mention it, and I have been asked in the past \u2018are they crowns on your teeth?\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been told the vapes leave residue around the top of your teeth and gumline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what causes the damage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Instasmile veneers mean I\u2019ve finally got my smile back.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stacey decided to quit her vape habit six months ago and says she realised she \u201cdidn\u2019t actually enjoy it\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her GP prescribed her Nicorette patches to help with cravings, but they did not help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so hard to stop,\u201d Stacey, who originally shared her story with Sell Us Your Story, said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t addicted to the nicotine I was more so doing it out of habit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe standard 600 puff vapes that used to be out would sometimes only last a day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWith cigarettes you know how much you are smoking I suppose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWith vaping you\u2019re not really aware just how much you\u2019re doing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn the end it was really hard but I managed to go cold turkey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI tried quitting few times and realised it was just a habit \u2013 I didn\u2019t actually enjoy it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t for the nicotine rush or the flavour I just found myself doing it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Stacey has looked into going privately to solve the issues with her teeth, but worries about the price of treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

She said: \u201cI was a dental nurse after I left school and I don\u2019t think crowns would be suitable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIf they take my two front teeth out and I need a denture, when you factor in what it will need and the price is just ridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She was scrolling on social media when she came across the Instasmile clip in veneers, which she purchased for \u00a3200 in January 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Stacey had to send 12 different impressions to ensure they were the perfect fit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI don\u2019t wear them at home but if I\u2019m going out I\u2019ll pop them in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like going out and hated conversing with people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWith the shape of my mouth when I\u2019m talking it\u2019s really noticeable it\u2019s obviously black.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn photos I would always pout and never smile, and that was the reason why.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

She believes there is \u201cmore focus\u201d on vapes\u2019 being harmful for people\u2019s lungs rather than damage to teeth like hers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She said: \u201cI don\u2019t think vapes causing damage to teeth, there is enough awareness about that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThey start vaping younger now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was a 15-year-old they could be in the same position I\u2019m in by the age of 20, and I don\u2019t think there is enough awareness, like how dangerous the sweetness and residue leaves on teeth\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stacey has recently ordered a bottom teeth set of veneers \u201cso it matches\u201d her top set.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

NHS Better Health says that vaping \u201cposes a small fraction of the risks of smoking\u201d but also makes clear they are not regulated and we do not know what is in them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They said: \u201cAll products for sale must be notified to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) with detailed information including listing of all ingredients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAlways buy your vaping products from a reputable supplier like a specialist vape shop, pharmacy, supermarket or a UK-based online retailer so they are covered by UK safety and quality regulations\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
