Back to the Future and Top Gun star James Tolkan has died aged 94 as tributes flooded in for the actor who appeared in a number of iconic shows and films.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The news of Tolkan\u2019s death was announced by a family spokesperson as well as by Back to the Future writer-producer Bob Gale. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a statement on the franchise\u2019s\u00a0website read: “Actor James Tolkan, son of Ralph Tolkan and Margery Sibola, passed away peacefully in Saranac Lake, NY on March 26, 2026.\u00a0 He was 94.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tolkan planned the memorable role as\u00a0Hill Valley High School chief\u00a0Mr. Strickland, iconic for shouting “slacker” throughout the trilogy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Tolkan also played the character of Stinger, the commanding officer of\u00a0Tom Cruise\u00a0and Anthony Edwards\u2019 characters in the legendary 1986 film Top Gun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The actor featured in a number of other well-known productions such as Masters of the Universe and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

In the latter he played Dr. Oates,\u00a0a stern administrator at Bel-Air Academy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Tribute poured in for the actor from former co-stars, notably Michael J. Fox, who played star of the Back to the Future franchise, Marty McFly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

He wrote on his Instagram story: “RIP the great James Tolkan. You were definitely no slacker. [Grateful] to know you, act with you, and direct you in Tales from the Crypt. I’ll miss you pal.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Christopher Lloyd, who played Emmett “Doc” Brown in the trilogy paid tribute with an Instagram post. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was captioned: “James, where you\u2019re going\u2026you don\u2019t need roads. Miss you friend.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Before becoming a Hollywood actor, Tolkan served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy, although was discharged due to a heart condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

This led to Tolkan persuing his passion for acting, earning a BA in drama from the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The statement on the Back to the Future website states: “Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces in Des Moines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It added: “Jim adored animals and would appreciate donations in his memory to your local animal shelter, animal rescue organization or Humane Society chapter.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
