{"id":4459,"date":"2026-03-26T01:57:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T01:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=4459"},"modified":"2026-03-26T01:57:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T01:57:37","slug":"spike-in-cost-of-diesel-threatens-consumer-wallets-global-supply-chain-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=4459","title":{"rendered":"Spike in cost of diesel threatens consumer wallets, global supply chain: experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>While the war in Iran has sent gasoline prices soaring around the world, there are growing concerns about how the spike in the cost of other fuels could also affect consumers and the broader economy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In Canada, the average price of diesel has surged to nearly $2.30 per litre \u2014 more than 50 per cent higher than just three months ago.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tWhile diesel was selling for about $1.90 per litre in Calgary on Wednesday, it has soared to well over $2. per litre in some other parts of Canada recently.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unprecedented. We\u2019ve never seen anything like this in the oil market or the refined products market and it\u2019s getting worse,\u201d said Calgary-based petroleum industry analyst Richard Masson.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe tankers that left four weeks ago just before the war started are just starting to unload at their destinations,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>About 13 million barrels of oil per day normally move through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf \u2014 one of the busiest and most strategically significant shipping routes in the world and a key oil choke point \u2014 about 25 per cent of global oil shipments.<\/p>\n<p>The closure has disrupted oil and gas shipments from the region and rattled markets around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes three to four weeks to get where they\u2019re going, but over the last four weeks there have been no tankers leaving out of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox__inner\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cSo over the next few weeks, places that need those fuels aren\u2019t going to be getting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tWhile the soaring price of gas has put a dent in drivers\u2019 pocketbooks, a spike in the cost of diesel, which the transportation industry relies on, threatens to do even more damage.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Masson said the refined products market is experiencing prices like $200 a barrel for diesel fuel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAnd more than that, countries like China have banned exports of refined products. I\u2019m sure it\u2019s going to,\u201d said Tsu, who admits restaurant menu prices will need to increase if freight and delivery charges increase.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tsu said a lot of restaurants are working with local farmers in an effort to keep transportation costs down and still provide excellent products and that helps \u201cmassively.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tPetroleum industry analyst Richard Masson says, if diesel prices increase too much, we could see an entire breakdown in the supply chain, similar to what happened during the COVID pandemic.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Masson said if diesel prices get too high, it could cause the entire supply chain to break down.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s two parts to that. One is the price gets higher for transportation because of the diesel cost and so that gets transmitted through to prices,\u201d said Masson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other is people just can\u2019t get hold of the product physically and so they stop shipping things and so the supply chains start to break down.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox__inner\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI\u2019m seeing more and more talk about supply chains breaking down like happened during COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the members of the International Energy Agency recently agreed to release hundreds of millions of oil from their strategic emergency reserves in an effort to combat a possible shortage of Middle East oil, Masson said it may not help prevent a shortage of diesel, because it\u2019s not the right kind of oil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tCalgary-based Petroleum industry analyst, Richard Masson, said the oil that is shipped out of Middle East is more suitable for making diesel than the light crude produced in many other parts of the world.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tREUTERS\/Hamad I Mohammed\/File Photo\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Middle East produces kind of a medium-sour crude, and that crude goes into refineries and makes a larger proportion of diesel and a smaller proportion of gasoline.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"c-blockquote l-article__blockquote\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox\">\n<div class=\"c-infoBox__inner\">\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cWhen that crude goes missing, it affects the diesel supply more and this is the challenge because not all crude oil is the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While much of the oil produced in Canada is suitable for making diesel, Masson said most of the recent increase in U.S. production is lighter oil obtained through fracking, and is not suitable for making diesel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have this real problem where not only is there a smaller supply of crude, but it\u2019s not the right kinds of crude in the right refineries to keep production of things like diesel going at the rate we need \u2014 and of course, the economy depends on diesel,\u201d said Masson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we we have to find a way to adjust our consumption and the way we do that is by price.
