suggests that financial circumstances can be part of why Canadians stay in relationships.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The data found that 73 per cent of Canadians believe that \u201cmany people stay together in marriage or in common law relationships for financial reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 80 per cent of Canadians say life is more affordable in a relationship versus being single.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly one in four (23 per cent) of surveyed Canadians also said they like the idea of a \u201cfive-year renewable relationship contract\u201d instead of getting married.<\/p>\n<p>The survey states that four in 10 Canadians (40 per cent) say marriage is \u201cmainly about practicalities for those planning or already have children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This view is higher among Canadians who identify as male (at 45 per cent) versus female (36 per cent).<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition, 83 per cent believe that couples often stay together for the sake of their children.<\/p>\n<p>Clay Jarvis, a financial expert at NerdWallet Canada, said marriage is a \u201cmajor financial decision\u201d that should encourage couples to evaluate their financial situations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if the conversation is about determining whether to have kids because you can afford them now, I think that\u2019s because your reality now is what you\u2019re basing all of your decisions on,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know where your career is going to be, if you\u2019re going to have your job two, three, five years from now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo think, \u2018Well I\u2019m going to need to be spending thousands of dollars on diapers over the next few years or baby food or we need to get a bigger house, or we needed to buy a car,\u2019 all of those things add up.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"tp_video\">\n<div class=\"c-video c-videoPlay \" Canada study reported that Canada\u2019s total fertility rate was 1.25 children per woman in 2024, a record low.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story id=\"should-single-canadians-get-more-tax-benefits\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c-sectionHeading__title\">\n\t\t\t\tShould single Canadians get more tax benefits?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The survey also found that over a quarter of Canadians (27 per cent) say, \u201cif they won the lottery and had a partner, they\u2019d likely split up with their partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<div married or common law couples \u201cget more tax advantages than single Canadians,\u201d with 63 per cent saying, \u201cthere should be more tax breaks for single Canadians who don\u2019t get to share expenses with a partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jarvis said that while there are \u201ca lot of benefits to being common law or married,\u201d this does not apply to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really something that\u2019s going to make a huge difference for especially a lot of young couples,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of these benefits, they\u2019re like sharing medical expenses and donations, we\u2019re transferring unused credits around, pension income or disability tax credits you know things related to RSPs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad to tax time, I think that\u2019s just a really distorted and maybe na\u00efve way of looking at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"section-heading\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<span prenuptial agreement if their partner was wealthier or had a much higher income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five per cent of Canadians disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that over a quarter of Canadians (27 per cent) say \u201cif they won the lottery and had a partner, they\u2019d likely split up with their partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>You might sign a prenup because your parents gifted you a down payment for a house and they don\u2019t want this partner that they don\u2019t know as well to walk away with half of the house that they help pay for,\u201d Jarvis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are practical guardrails that a prenup can provide for a relationship. February 2026 TD Bank survey reported that \u201cmore than half (51 per cent) of Gen Z Canadians say they\u2019d want their partner to sign a prenup if they got married or entered a common-law significantly higher than the national average of 28 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Jarvis said it is important to relay any \u201cstresses and concerns\u201d about finances as decisions surrounding finances grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to do that openly and constructively, it \u2026 peels away a layer from relationships that generally cause people a lot of stress and a lot of pain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think being open and honest is the best thing you can do because then if there are issues related to your finances,<em>\u00a0<\/em>you can tackle them together rather than putting up some sort of defensive wall between you and your partner, that\u2019s just going to make things more difficult down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-promo \">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img
