parents plan to offer \u201cfree room and board\u201d to their children in post-secondary education, which comes amid the cost of living crunch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 2025 Survey of Approaches to Educational Planning from Statistics Canada \u201cgathered information from parents and guardians on the strategies they use to prepare for their children\u2019s post-secondary education, their plans for financing schooling and the barriers to saving for higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters (71 per cent) of parents and guardians of children under 18 years of age in Canada said they are working to save for their children\u2019s post-secondary education \u201cthrough registered or other savings vehicles\u201d in 2025, a slight increase from 2020, which sat at 69 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more of an eye-opener, just even for parents as to what budgeting needs to look like, what type of conversations they need to have, what type of savings that needs to be done,\u201d said Sumaiya Bhula, senior manager and a product group owner at TD Bank.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The data also shows who may be struggling to save for post-secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>Less than half (44 per cent) of children whose parents had a high school diploma or less had savings set aside for their post-secondary education in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This proportion increased to 65 per cent among children whose parents had a trades certificate or college diploma and to 79 per cent among children whose parents had a university degree.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to post-secondary education savings, Canadian parents also planned to support their children in other ways.<\/p>\n<p>The survey states that 64 per cent of parents indicated that they would help their children pay for post-secondary education once they begin, and 27 per cent indicated that they plan to help them repay all or part of a student loan.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 17 per cent plan to take out loans when the time comes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" highest income quintile had savings set aside, compared with 52 per cent of children in families in the lowest income quintile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div some people is a \u201clack of information\u201d and not being aware of what\u2019s available to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s making sure you have a budget and a financial plan for the parents and the student,\u201d Bhula said. \u201cBecause collectively they need to be in sync and both need to think about their own financial future, but how are they supporting each other to make that whole happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"section-heading\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"l-article__sectionAnchor c-sectionHeading__anchor\" id=\"more-parents-are-investing-early\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c-sectionHeading__title\">\n\t\t\t\tMore parents are investing early\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The study also found that among children younger than 18 years with post-secondary education savings, approximately 89 per cent had a registered education savings plan (<a>RESP) in 2025, up from 85 per cent in 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While\u00a0<a>RESPs were \u201cthe most common method of saving\u201d in 2025, bank accounts in the child\u2019s name or in-trust accounts (used by 28 per cent of parents) and tax-free savings accounts (28 per cent) were also popular.<\/p>\n<section id=\"content-dynamic-trending-stories\" registered disability savings plans (3 per cent) and other types of investments (11 per cent).<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" have a \u201crobust plan\u201d in place to set money aside for post-secondary education, saying \u201cno amount is too small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important to \u2026 understand all the pieces that come with it. For example, as tuition goes up, it seems to be going up every year, books, if you\u2019re going to be living off campus, food, there\u2019s a lot of components that come in with that,\u201d said Bhula.<\/p>\n<p>She also mentioned the possibility of a student continuing their education after completing a degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think when your child is in university or college at that time, you probably have a sense with your child where they want to go, or even when they\u2019re in high school, if they want to continue their education. I think that\u2019s why \u2026 starting those conversations is so important because that way after the four years, you might need to save a little bit more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad stated they were planning to \u201cstart later\u201d to save for their children\u2019s post-secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons parents gave for not starting to save earlier were that all available funds go toward covering day-to-day expenses (54 per cent), they prefer to pay education costs when the time comes (33 per cent) and they want to pay off debt first (27 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he experienced an influx of calls from students expressing concern about the government\u2019s decision to raise tuition fees and cut OSAP grants, saying \u201che couldn\u2019t fight against post-secondary leaders any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week,\u00a0the government confirmed it would allow colleges and universities to raise tuition fees\u00a0by two per cent a year and substantially scale back the grant funding available to students.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below
