{"id":3022,"date":"2026-01-27T23:50:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T23:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=3022"},"modified":"2026-01-27T23:50:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T23:50:59","slug":"canada-could-increase-real-gdp-by-7-if-it-drops-all-internal-trade-barriers-imf-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=3022","title":{"rendered":"Canada could increase real GDP by 7% if it drops all internal trade barriers: IMF &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>If Canada were to fully eliminate its internal trade barriers, it could increase its real GDP by about seven per cent in the long run, the International Monetary Fund says in a new report.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The report, published Tuesday, said such a move could mean roughly $210 billion in GDP, with the IMF saying the gains per province and territory \u201creinforces the case for reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese frictions are economically consequential,\u201d the IMF report says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoods, services, and workers face significant barriers when moving across provincial and territorial lines \u2014 a fragmentation that affects productivity, competitiveness, and overall resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IMF notes the interprovincial trade barriers that remain in place equate to about a nine per cent tariff nationally, using \u201cwidely accepted trade analysis methods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It says the costs are mostly concentrated in services, which make up the majority of trade between provinces. territories and federal government signed an agreement to allow the trade of tens of thousands of goods to be free.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, which took effect in December, applies to most products, was applauded by some, most services were excluded from the deal \u2014 a sector that the IMF notes makes up the majority of GDP gains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoughly four-fifths of the total GDP gains would come from liberalizing services sectors,\u201d the report notes. \u201cThis reflects their growing weight in the economy and their role as inputs into nearly all other activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It adds barriers in finance, telecommunications, transportation and professional services \u201cripple through the economy\u201d and raise costs beyond the sectors they come from.<\/p>\n<div type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The impact that could come from fully eliminating the barriers would be felt differently by jurisdiction. The report says the smaller provinces would gain the most in percentage terms as companies gain larger market access. For example, Prince Edward Island would see a nearly 40 per cent point change in GDP per worker.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario and Quebec, the two largest provinces, would see a smaller change of about four to six per cent GDP, but the report says they will still benefit \u201csubstantially in absolute terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternal integration is not a zero-sum reallocation \u2014 it is a national productivity dividend,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF notes such a change will take time, with challenges around implementation and co-ordination, but said the country\u2019s economic future will be \u201cshaped\u201d not only on a global level, but also how it changes its domestic markets as well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity is now.
