{"id":2945,"date":"2026-01-25T10:53:47","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T10:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2945"},"modified":"2026-01-25T10:53:47","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T10:53:47","slug":"shakespeare-was-a-black-woman-book-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2945","title":{"rendered":"Shakespeare was a black woman, book claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-quite-the-claim\">It\u2019s quite the claim!<\/h2>\n<p>Arguably the greatest English language writer and one of the most pre-eminent dramatists was in fact a \u201cblack Jewish woman\u201d, a new book has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>According to the book, William Shakespeare was a black woman and the truth of his authorship was hidden.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It claims that it was hidden by centuries of \u201cWestern-centric and Eurocentric ideology\u201d, while the author says that the poet was a cosmopolitan woman with a \u201cmulticultural identity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the new book, titled The Real Shakespeare, this woman is identified as the historical figure Emilia Bassano, a poet with connections to the Tudor court.<\/p>\n<p>The book claims that Bassano used the \u201cShakespeare\u201d pen-name and wrote the canon of plays, only for her work to be stolen by an uneducated interloper from Stratford-upon-Avon.<\/p>\n<p>Then, it says, the interloper whom the world now knows as William Shakespeare, was revered by posterity as the idea of a \u201cwhite\u201d genius was preferred to a black female playwright.<\/p>\n<p>The author of the book, Irene Coslet, is a feminist historian. She claims that Emilia Bassano\u2019s skin, whom she identifies as the Bard, was lightened by portraitists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Shakespeare was a female of colour, this would draw attention to issues of peace and justice in society\u201d, she told The Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if women had a pivotal role and a civilising impact in history, but they have been silenced, belittled and erased from the dominant narrative?\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<p>During his lifetime, Shakespeare\u2019s own authorship was never doubted, while his fierce rival Ben Johnson hailed him as a genius \u201cfor all time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Some writers have suggested Bassano may be the inspiration for the \u201cDark Lady\u201d addressed in Shakespeare\u2019s sonnets.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the long-standing scepticism is based on doubt that Shakespeare, a man from provincial England with little formal education, was able to ascend to the level of a literary genius with an enormous breadth of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The legitimacy of Shakespeare\u2019s authorship has been questioned by a few scholars, as Ms Coslet\u2019s thesis, released by Pen and Sword books, echoes this scepticism.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorians have not managed to explain how the Stratford man, a semi-illiterate moneylender, managed to gain such a level of erudition\u201d, it states.<\/p>\n<p>It claims that scholars have been \u201cunable to explain why\u201d Shakespeare was able to incorporate influences of various cultures in his work, as a humble man from Warwickshire.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- Bottom ad unit --><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- Custom pseudo content\/category -->\n            <\/div>\n<p>#Shakespeare #black #woman #book #claims<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s quite the claim!
