British MP Josh Babarinde has told Donald Trump he \u201ccan go f*** himself\u201d after the US president president claimed NATO allies avoided the front lines in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Trump sparked global outrage on Thursday (22 January) after he claimed NATO allies avoided the front lines in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

The US president said the US has \u201cnever needed\u201d its allies and that NATO troops stayed \u201ca little off the front lines\u201d in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Fox News at the World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland, Trump said: \u201cWe\u2019ve never needed them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have never really asked anything of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve been very good to Europe and many other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt has to be a two-way street.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments sparked outrage globally, notably in the UK, supposedly the US\u2019s closest ally, who suffered the second-most deaths in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

British political figures hit back at Trump\u2019s comments with Lib Dem president and MP for Eastbourne Josh Babarinde OBE hitting back hard on X.<\/p>\n

The MP wrote: Trump can go f**k himself. Anyone who mocks, demeans or minimises the sacrifices of British troops is no friend of our nation.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, leader of the Lib Dems Ed Davey also shared his thoughts on X.<\/p>\n

Sharing the video, he wrote: \u201c457 British troops lost their lives in Afghanistan. Trump avoided military service 5 times. How dare he question their sacrifice. Farage and all the others still fawning over Trump should be ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davey referenced how Trump had avoided the Vietnam draft five times, receiving five deferments.<\/p>\n

Four of these were for attending college and one for a claimed bone spur condition in his heels, a medical exemption reportedly obtained through a doctor with connections to his father, which allowed him to stay out of service.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This has previously led to the likes of Jesse Ventura, Vietnam veteran and former Minnesota governor, calling Trump \u201ca draft-dodging coward\u201d.<\/p>\n

Chair of the foreign affairs committee and Labour MP, Emily Thornberry, said that Trump\u2019s words were an \u201cabsolute insult\u201d to the 457 British service personnel killed in the conflict.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty, who served in Afghanistan, said it was \u201csad to see our nation\u2019s sacrifice, and that of our NATO partners, held so cheaply\u201d.<\/p>\n

Writing on X, he wrote: \u201cI served in Afghanistan. I saw first-hand the sacrifices made by British soldiers I served alongside in Sangin where we suffered horrific casualties, as did the US Marines the following year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe US military personnel share the view of President Trump; his words do them a disservice as our closest military allies. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad to see our nation\u2019s sacrifice, and that of our NATO partners, held so cheaply by the President of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UK joined a NATO force of dozens of countries which joined the US in Afghanistan after it called for help by invoking NATO\u2019s Article 5 after the 9\/11 terror attacks.<\/p>\n

NATO Article 5 specifies that \u201can armed attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members, and triggers an obligation for each member to come to its assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over 3,500 coalition soldiers had died as of 2021, when the US withdrew from the country.<\/p>\n

Around 2,459 of these were Americans.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 457 were British, 159 Canadian, 90 French, 62 German, 53 Italian, 44 Polish, 43 Danish, 41 Australian and fatalities from 23 more countries.<\/p>\n

In fact, with 32 deaths, Georgia suffered the highest number of deaths per million of its population.<\/p>\n
