{"id":2841,"date":"2026-01-21T21:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2841"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:44:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:44:08","slug":"house-of-lords-votes-to-ban-social-media-for-under-16s-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2841","title":{"rendered":"House of Lords votes to ban social media for under-16s in UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-house-of-lords-has-backed-the-amendment\">The House of Lords has backed the amendment<\/h2>\n<p>The House of Lord has voted to ban social media for under-16s in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The House voted today with 261 voting in favour of an amendment to the Children\u2019s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, with 150 voting against.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The amendment to the Children\u2019s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which was introduced by the House of Commons in 2024, will have to be passed back to the Commons being passed and entering into law.<\/p>\n<p>While the Government could attempt to scrap the change, it is unlikely, with most Labour MP\u2019s supporting the ban, or not willing to go against the party line.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udea8 BREAKING: The Lords have voted to ban under-16s from using social media<\/p>\n<p>Ban: 261 <br \/>No ban: 150 <\/p>\n<p>The Government can try to scrap the amendment but most Labour MPs support a ban and would be risking a rebellion<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Politics UK (@PolitlcsUK) <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolitlcsUK\/status\/2014078423904199144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This ultimately makes it very likely for the amendment to be passed.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment was proposed by Tory former education minister Lord Nash alongside former Labour MP Baroness Berger, Lib Dem peer Baroness Benjamin, and crossbencher Baroness Cass.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment says that within 12 months of the act passing, the government must ensure social media sites use \u201chighly effective\u201d age checks to prevent those under 16 years of age from becoming users. <\/p>\n<p>This news follows on from Australia introducing a social media ban for under-16s at the end of last year.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- Bottom ad unit --><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- Custom pseudo content\/category -->\n            <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/>#House #Lords #votes #ban #social #media #under16s<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Lords has backed the amendment The House of Lord has voted to ban social media for under-16s in the UK.
