A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being mauled by a large shark.<\/p>\n

The incident happened at around 4.30pm local time at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, Sydney.<\/p>\n
Police rushed to the scene with \u2018multiple resources\u2019 including intensive care paramedics and aeromedical teams with a helicopter.<\/p>\n
He was rushed to Rose Bay for urgent treatment while other officers remained at the beach to comfort those traumatised by what they had seen.<\/p>\n
Cops said that \u201cWater Police officers attached two medical tourniquets\u201d before giving the boy first aid en route to Rose Bay.<\/p>\n
He sustained \u2018serious leg injuries\u2019 in the attack and was given immediate aid at hospital.<\/p>\n
New South Wales police said that his \u2018injuries are consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark\u2019.<\/p>\n
An ambulance spokesperson added: \u201cThe patient, a teenage boy, with critical injuries to both of his legs, was transported to Sydney Children\u2019s Hospital, Randwick, in a critical condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The beach has since been closed off and swimmers have been urged to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty said: \u201cThis is a tragic shark attack on a young boy having a swim on a Sunday afternoon in a harbour beach in Sydney\u2019s east.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand there were also a lot of young people on the beach at the time of the attack. Our thoughts are also with them.\u201d<\/p>\n
