Particularly the fallout effects from the trade war, and as trade issues relate to companies really being cautious about hiring right now,\u201d says retail analyst Bruce Winder.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cConsumers feel that and they\u2019re in the same boat. They\u2019re being very choiceful with what they spend on right now. Make a list and stick to it,\u201d says personal finance expert Shannon Terrell at NerdWallet Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to make points work for you this holiday season comes down to using the resources you have at your disposal as strategically as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"section-heading\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"l-article__sectionAnchor c-sectionHeading__anchor\" id=\"do-loyalty-points-programs-really-work\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c-sectionHeading__title\">\n\t\t\t\tDo loyalty, points programs really work?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Loyalty programs could be a good way to save money, but it\u2019s important to choose the right ones, have a good strategy and be consistent to make the most of them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whether loyalty programs lead to savings depends on a wide variety of factors because each consumer has different needs and preferences when it comes to shopping for essentials and other items \u2014 including gifts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers, whether they are part of a loyalty program with a retailer or whether they sit outside that program, don\u2019t show any discernibly different level of loyalty to the retailers, surprisingly,\u201d says Doug Stephens, founder and CEO at Retail Prophet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the time we pick a grocery store because it satisfies our needs and it\u2019s relatively convenient to get to. Loyalty programs don\u2019t actually foster much more than transactional loyalty at best. When the program is free, the inference is that there isn\u2019t really a significant value to the program in the first place,\u201d says Stephens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m paying for an Amazon Prime membership, there\u2019s an implied value to that, so I\u2019m more inclined to go and shop on Prime Days. Costco memberships have about a 90+ per cent renewal rate, so people clearly feel that they\u2019re getting value from their paid memberships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether retailers offer paid or free loyalty programs, it\u2019s essential to stay consistent with those retailers to see the most savings over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s the problem with loyalty: If it\u2019s a one-off thing, if you\u2019re buying something once a year or once every two years, and you\u2019re not really frequently buying there, then loyalty isn\u2019t going to work,\u201d says Winder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoyalty works well when there\u2019s high shopper frequency in a category, and when you add a few of those categories together and make an ecosystem, that\u2019s when loyalty offers good value. Outside of that, it doesn\u2019t necessarily offer good value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winder says the \u201cecosystem\u201d could be creating a lifestyle and routine that works for an individual that takes advantage of multiple locations and a family of stores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll use my living life as an example. It gets a little cumbersome if you have too many loyalty programs that may or may not push you in a direction that you don\u2019t need to go in,\u201d says Winder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re buying a gift for a loved one and it\u2019s a one-off, you probably don\u2019t need a loyalty program.
