{"id":2406,"date":"2025-10-23T19:09:31","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T19:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2406"},"modified":"2025-10-23T19:09:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T19:09:31","slug":"trump-pardons-canadian-crypto-billionaire-serving-money-laundering-sentence-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldpumpnews.com\/?p=2406","title":{"rendered":"Trump pardons Canadian crypto billionaire serving money laundering sentence &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump has pardoned Changpeng Zhao, the convicted founder of the giant Binance cryptocurrency exchange, a White House official said on Thursday, the latest in a series of shows of clemency for crypto executives and other criminals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had \u201cexercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden Administration in their war on cryptocurrency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zhao said in a post on social media platform X that he was \u201cDeeply grateful for today\u2019s pardon and to President Trump for upholding America\u2019s commitment to fairness, innovation, and justice.\u201d He added: \u201cWill do everything we can to help make America the Capital of Crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Binance, the world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volumes, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Zhao, a billionaire who is one of the most influential figures in the crypto sector, in 2023 stepped down as chief of Binance after the company pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program and paid a penalty of US$4.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Zhao, a citizen of Canada who was born in China, personally paid a fine of $50 million and served nearly four months in prison last year after pleading guilty to the same charge.
