<\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump has threatened Russia with 100 per cent \u201csecondary tariffs\u201d if the war in Ukraine does not end soon, as he announced an agreement with Nato allies to send more weapons to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>During a meeting in the Oval Office with Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte on Monday, the US president said he was \u201cvery unhappy\u201d with Moscow over the lack of progress towards a deal to end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very unhappy \u2014 I am \u2014 with Russia,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed in President [Vladimir] Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don\u2019t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent, you\u2019d call them secondary tariffs,\u201d he added. The tariffs would be \u201cbiting\u201d and \u201cvery, very powerful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has previously raised the prospect of applying so-called \u201csecondary tariffs\u201d, which would hit countries that trade with Moscow, as he has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin\u2019s intransigence in peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been very successful in settling wars\u201d with trade, Trump claimed, citing conflicts between India and Pakistan, and Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin did not immediately react to Trump\u2019s announcement. Konstantin Kosachev, deputy speaker of Russia\u2019s senate, wrote on social media that \u201cthe Europeans will have to keep shelling out\u2009[for arms supplies to Kyiv]\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009the only beneficiary is the US defence industry.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cOver 50 days a whole lot can change on the battlefield and in the moods of those in power in the US and Nato. But our mood won\u2019t be affected at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s White House meeting, Trump also confirmed plans to send weapons to Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems.<\/p>\n<p>The president said \u201cbillions of dollars\u2019 worth of military equipment\u201d would be purchased by Nato allies from the US, and that it would \u201cbe quickly distributed to the battlefield\u201d in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Rutte said Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Canada all hoped to be part of the weapons deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke with Germany, spoke with most of the larger [Nato] countries, and they are really enthusiastic about this,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>The weapons deal included \u201ceverything\u201d, Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019s Patriots. It\u2019s all of them. It\u2019s a full complement with the batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president suggested that some Patriots would come from Norway, and said one country had 17 Patriot systems \u201cgetting ready to be shipped\u201d, which could be given to Kyiv \u201cvery quickly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Rutte said this would be \u201conly the first wave\u201d of weapons to Ukraine, adding that more would follow.<\/p>\n<p>Patriot interceptor missiles are crucial for Ukraine\u2019s defences against Russian air attacks. The US-made system is the only one in Kyiv\u2019s arsenal capable of shooting down Russian ballistic missiles. Hundreds of Iranian-designed suicide drones have been aimed at civilian and military infrastructure alongside cruise and ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s air defences have been in short supply, forcing its military to make difficult decisions about which incoming weapons to shoot down.
