Nasdaq said it had \u201cterminated, effective immediately\u201d an employee over \u201ccommentary that condones or celebrates violence\u201d. It was unclear whether the reports from the public factored into the firings.<\/p>\n<p>Political activist Olivia Krolczyk also called for the punishment of people who appeared to be celebrating Kirk\u2019s death. Even before Vance\u2019s comments on Monday she posted on X that she had contacted more than 700 employers regarding their workers\u2019 social media posts. <\/p>\n<p>The Carolina Panthers football team, The Washington Post, law firm Perkins Coie and American Airlines have also dismissed staff for their public comments about Kirk.<\/p>\n<p>The offending posts have ranged from a United Airlines pilot calling Kirk a \u201cfucking Nazi\u201d to a South Carolina high school teacher writing on Facebook that \u201cAmerica became greater\u201d after the assassination, and a Secret Service agent attributing the murder to \u201ckarma\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump, was an outspoken conservative known for co-founding the rightwing youth organisation Turning Point USA. Authorities on Tuesday charged 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder in connection with the killing. <\/p>\n<p>Companies have cracked down on employees\u2019 political expression both in and out of the office amid the US\u2019s deepening political divide. Some also dismissed workers for comments seen as inflammatory after Hamas\u2019s October 7 2023 attack on Israel and the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon last Thursday urged caution in posting online about Kirk\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Chief spokesperson Sean Parnell said on X that it was \u201cunacceptable\u201d for troops and other defence department personnel \u201cto celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American\u201d and that there would be \u201czero tolerance for it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Defence secretary Pete Hegseth reposted Parnell\u2019s statement and said that his department was \u201ctracking all these very closely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On college campuses, Clemson University and Middle Tennessee State University said they had fired staff for comments made following the assassination. The non-profit Joe Burrow Foundation, which helps underprivileged children, and biomedical research centre the Broad Institute severed ties with employees as well.<\/p>\n<p>The media sector was rife with examples of workers being terminated over Kirk-related comments. <\/p>\n<p>Among the first reported fired was MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd, who said on air that \u201chateful thoughts lead to hateful words which ultimately lead to hateful actions\u201d after initial reports that shots had been fired at an event where Kirk was speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Right Wing media mob ginned up, went after me on a plethora of platforms, and MSNBC reacted to that mob,\u201d Dowd wrote in a Substack post about the incident last week.<\/p>\n<aside aria-labelledby=\"aside-label\" class=\"n-content-recommended--single-story n-content-recommended--inset\" data-component=\"recommended\">\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-teaser o-teaser--article o-teaser--small o-teaser--stacked o-teaser--has-image o-teaser--opinion js-teaser\" data-id=\"27a7c75b-7fd5-41af-8e70-8d9f48866661\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-container js-teaser-image-container\">\n<div class=\"o-teaser__image-placeholder\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2289\/1287\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2F__origami%2Fservice%2Fimage%2Fv2%2Fimages%2Fraw%2Fhttps%253A%252F%252Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net%252Fproduction%252F3831b87b-1bb2-4901-9967-fd08d5fc2b24.jpg%3Fsource%3Dnext-article%26fit%3Dscale-down%26quality%3Dhighest%26width%3D700%26dpr%3D1?source=next&amp;fit=scale-down&amp;dpr=2&amp;width=240\" alt=\"Morgan Carter places an American flag among flowers at a vigil for Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Karen Attiah said she was fired from her role as an opinion writer for The Washington Post last week after posting what she said was a statement from Kirk saying that \u201cBlack women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously\u201d after his death.<\/p>\n<p>Kirk had in fact referred to specific Black women including Michelle Obama and Ketanji Brown Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey rushed to fire me without even a conversation \u2014 claiming disparagement on race,\u201d Attiah wrote in a Substack post announcing her firing. \u201cThis was not only a hasty over-reach, but a violation of the very standards of journalistic fairness and rigour the Post claims to uphold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler apologised for Dowd\u2019s comments in a statement, calling them \u201cinappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable\u201d.
